Goodreads ‘To-Read’ Sort #8

So this is how it works

  • Go to your Goodreads ‘to-read’ shelf.
  • Order them on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5-10 (to how ever many you want really) books. Of course, if you do this weekly or more frequently, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books…
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Here we go again…

‘Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever’ By James Patterson
maximumIt’s 24 hours since Max Ride and her fellow bird-kids escaped the New York Institute, and they’re still on the run. But the six companions – 98% human, 2% bird – came away with some vital information, if they can decode the garbled words and numbers, perhaps they’ll find out where their parents are.
Still going to KEEP this one. I purchased the first few books from the series years ago and really want to read them.

‘Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports’ By James Patterson
rideYou’re about to join the adventures of Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel, six extraordinary kids who have powers like no other: they can fly, and they’re being chased – no, hunted – across America and around the world.
THIS IS THE END, MY FRIENDS. But I promise that you’ll fly higher than ever before in this wild adventure, witness battles worthy of multiplex movie screens, and laugh until your sides hurt. There’s even a little romance… But all good things – and even terrible, unspeakable ones – must come to an end.
This is that moment in time, I’m afraid. Either we save the world, or we crash and burn. And I mean all of us – even you, faithful reader, because you play a very big part in this story. The flock needs your help. Yes, you.

Again this one will be a KEEP. I purchased the first three at the same time.

‘How Children Learn Language’ By William D. O Grady
howDemonstrating how children learn to produce and distinguish between sounds, and their acquisition of words and meanings, this book explains their incredible mastery of language. William O’Grady provides readers with an overview not only of the language acquisition process itself, but also of the ingenious experiments and techniques that researchers use to investigate this mysterious phenomenon.

Another text book I have for work. KEEP.

‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ By J.K. Rowling
talesThe Tales of Beedle the Bard contains five richly diverse fairy tales, each with its own magical character, that will variously bring delight, laughter and the thrill of mortal peril.
Essential and enjoyable reading for Muggles and wizards alike, The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a uniquely magical volume. With illuminating notes by Albus Dumbledore.
Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Lumos, a charity working to transform the lives of disadvantaged children.

Love everything Harry Potter and I will read this! KEEP.

‘Quidditch Through the Ages’ By Kennilworthy Whisp (J.K. Rowling)
QuidditchIf you have ever asked yourself where the Golden Snitch came from, how the Bludgers came into existence or why the Wigtown Wanderers have pictures of meat cleavers on their robes, you need Quidditch Through the Ages. This invaluable volume is consulted by young Quidditch fans on an almost daily basis.
Proceeds from the sale of this book go to Comic Relief, who will use your money to continue improving and changing lives – work that is even more important and astonishing that the three and a half second capture of the Golden Snitch by Roderick Plumpton in 1921.

Another Harry Potter Book, another obvious KEEP.

‘Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls and Everything in Between’ By Lauren Graham
talkingIn this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.
In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).
In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.
Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).
Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

As a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan, I am 100% KEEPING this one. Although I don’t have a physical copy, I plan to listen to the Audiobook from Audible, as Lauren Graham herself reads it and I’m all about that.

‘What Happened’ By Hillary Clinton
whatFor the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.
In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterwards. With humour and candour, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.
She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analysing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.
The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

I’m not a massive fan of autobiographies, although I really do think this would be a great one to listen to – that is if Hillary herself is reading it. KEEP.

‘Magnus Chase and the Ship of the Dead’ By Rick Riordan
shipMagnus Chase, a once-homeless teen, is a resident of the Hotel Valhalla and one of Odin’s chosen warriors. As the son of Frey, the god of summer, fertility, and health, Magnus isn’t naturally inclined to fighting. But he has strong and steadfast friends, including Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, and Samirah the Valkyrie, and together they have achieved brave deeds, such as defeating Fenris Wolf and battling giants for Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Now Magnus and his crew must sail to the farthest borders of Jotunheim and Niflheim in pursuit of Asgard’s greatest threat. Will they succeed in their perilous journey, or is Ragnarok lurking on the horizon?

This one will be a DELETE. Its the third instalment in a Trilogy I haven’t even started yet. I’ll add it again if I love the first two.

This round I ended up keeping 9/10 and deleting 1/10
